Case Studies & Results

TregoED critical thinking strategies have been used many different ways to resolve a variety of difficult issues.

Developing community support for tough choices—a district in British Columbia, Canada was grappling with decreasing enrollment. District leaders used TregoED strategies to work with the Board and community in examining possible options. Ultimately, they decided to close some schools. Involving many stakeholders helped ensure support for an otherwise contentious solution.

Implementing significant changes—a NJ district decided to redesign its high school schedule to accommodate increasing enrollment and new learning objectives. They used TregoED strategies to collect information on concerns and potential problems and made adjustments accordingly. A new schedule was developed and seamlessly implemented.

Developing future leaders—a FL district had a large number of new school leaders with limited experience. They offered TregoED training to provide leaders with a consistent skill set. Their commitment to the training increased as they discovered it was equally valuable for instructional and non-instructional people—and it helped create a culture of increased respect and collaboration.

Developing rationale for budget decisions—a CA county intermediate unit hosted a workshop for teams from several districts. Facing record budget cuts, leaders needed to develop a rationale that could be consistently applied to budget decisions. Working with boards and communities, teams identified and prioritized criteria and then evaluated possible budget actions. Finally, implementation and communications plans were developed and launched.

What leaders tell us

Several months after their introductory workshop, more than 500 participants were surveyed. Here is what we learned:

  • 96% have used TregoED critical thinking strategies since the workshop
  • a majority identified the following top benefits of using the strategies:
    • Greater commitment from those involved
    • Increased confidence in end result
    • Better handling of conflict and/or involvement of others
    • Others better understand and/or accept the solution
    • Less wasted time
    • Provides visible record of how and why decisions were made
